A list of drones under 2kg

On September 29th 2016, Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) introduced less stringent requirements for people wanting to fly a very small remotely piloted aircraft under 2kg in take off weight. The sub 2kg rule means that Australian’s can legally fly drones with a take off weight of less than 2kg without needing to hold a RPA Operator’s Certificate (ReOC) or a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL). The sub 2kg rule also includes commercial work. UAVAIR have done the ground work and compiled a list of drones that fall under this threshold.

What do you need to do to fly a drone under 2kg?

Those planning on operating an RPA under 2kg need to notify CASA at least five business days before your first commercial flight and agree to operate by the standard guidelines. UAVAIR recommend completing an RPAS introductory course, like Flight Foundations, to become familiar with flying a drone safely as well as learning how to fly within Australian law. UAVAIR’s Flight Foundations course is designed to provide students with the skill and knowledge they need to confidently take your first drone into the air.

What about insurance?

Those planning to operate a sub 2kg drone for commercial gain should consider their insurance needs. If you already have public liability insurance you will need to contact your insurance provider to ensure your drone usage is covered, as it is NOT COVERED in most cases. To gain insurance for your commercial drone operations most insurance providers require you to be an RePL holder, alternatively QBE Insurance will offer RPAS insurance to those who complete UAVAIR’s 2 day Flight Foundations course.

So without further ado, here is the list!
